In this section you get an overview of the different tours EELS played. As an extra, you may download my two favourite tracks from every particular tour. Enjoy! E Solo Tour (1992-1995)
In 1992 E toured with Tori Amos as a supporting act to promote his first album A Man Called (E). A year later Jonathan "Butch" Norton joined him and from now on both toured to promote E's second record called Broken Toy Shop. This tour saw them perform great covers like
I'm Only Sleeping, Strawberry Fields Forever and Sweet Home Alabama. Not much is known from this period of time. Anyway, after leaving his record company "Polydor", E & Butch met Tommy Walters. EELS was born.
E - Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas (Live)
E - Nowheresville (Live)Beautiful Freak Tour (1995-1997)
After EELS signed for DreamworksRecords (they were one of the first bands to get signed by the company) they played a couple of radioshows and try-out gigs.
A year later EELS' first record was relesead, Beautiful Freak. The band started touring the U.S.A. and Europe, opening for acts such as Poe and Screaming Trees and playing festivals like the French Inrock Festival and the German Rockpalast.
Although the band was a little reserved on stage, they improvised a lot. Tommy was not only the bassist. He sung background vocals, played french horn, trumpet, keys and a lot of other instruments. Also, he was the one who was responsible for the compositions and configurations of the live tracks, because EELS prefered it to play the live songs different than the studio versions.
The band was also noted for their extraordinary appearance. Once they dyed their hair yellow, as you can also see on the cover of the Rags to Rags Single. Another funny incident was their performance on a christmas show in december 96. The band entered the stage dressed up as christmas presents.
Moreover, the band played a lot of great covers like Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover, Fingertips Part III and If I Was Your Girlfriend.
In 1997 the band continued to rock the U.S.A. and Europe intensively, this time as a headlining act. Their impressive live shows built up a great reputation. It made Eels quite big stars in the independant music scene and soon they became festival favourites in Europe. At this time EELS played a few of their greatest concerts ever. But more and more contentions grew between Tommy and E. Tommy wouldn't accept the fact that E used the band as a platform to release his material. Also, Tommy couldn't stand the fact that EELS only played and acted according to E's wishes. In september 1997 Tommy quit the band and went to form his own band, which is currently known as Abandoned Pools.
Eels - Your Lucky Day In Hell (Live)
Eels - Manchild (Live)Electro Shock Blues Show (1998)
Adam Siegal replaced Tommy on bass at this tour, which promoted the second, much darker album Electro Shock Blues. On this tour EELS performed other fantastic covers like Open The Door and Livin' Life. Every single gig presented very sweet versions of great songs like Last Stop: This Town, Climbing To The Moon and My Beloved Monster, which was played with an added, very cool My Girl sequence.
On this tour E, Butch and Adam are a lot more impulsive towards the audience than at previous tours. Butch's live version of Efil's God certainly rocked.
The American leg of the tour was cancelled when E’s mom died of cancer in November 1998. They returned to Europe as a support act for Pulp later that month to finish off the Electro-Shock Blues tour. The shows opening for Pulp have been released on the Electro-Shock Blues Show - Live Album in 2002.
Eels - My Descent Into Madness (Live)
Eels - 3 Speed (Live)No Tour (1999)
There was no tour in this year, as E spent most of the time working on Daisies Of The Galaxy. E occasionally played solo shows at the Largo in Los Angeles. Eels were now officially a duo as Adam Siegal went on to work with his own band My Head again.
Respect The Rock Tour (2000)
After eating way too much, Butch had a dream. A dream about the EELS, performing their songs as an orchestra. Next morning he told E about his dream and from now on it was clear that in the following year the eels would tour as an orchestra.
It was surely the most lighthearted and funniest tour of EELS, which promoted the album Daisies Of The Galaxy. The EELS Orchestra 2000 consisted of E, Butch, Lisa Germano, who sang and played Strings, Guitar, & Keys, Orest Balaban (Bass), David Lhebo (Reeds) and Probyn Gregory (Horns).
The opening sequence was an orchestrated medley of Eels hits, which was very well accepted by the audience, which was seated at most of the gigs. Among other tunes, EELS played evergreens like Fucker, Ant Farm and Mr E's Beautiful Blues and great new stuff like Abortion in the sky, Oh what a beautiful morning and Vice President Fruitley. An EELS tour wouldn't be an EELS tour, if Butch had not his own moment. One of this weird, yet funny moments has been captured on the live album, namely "Hot and Cold".
In America most shows got cancelled and E had to do some solo-shows opening for Fiona Apple to promote the album. Sadly, at the end of the tour longtime Eels roadie Spider – who acted as a support act during the last part of the tour as well - died of a heart attack. This tour, which'll never be forgotten by EELS and their fans, was captured on the Oh What A Beautiful Morning Live Album.
Eels - Brave Little Soldier (Live)
Eels - Mr E's Beautiful Blues (Live)Bus Driving, Band Rocking Tour (2001-2002)
This tour, which promoted the record Souljacker, saw the return of "pure rock and/or roll". Together with Butch, John Parish and Koool G Murder, E played at lots of festivals in the summer and many towns in the fall. In 2002, Joe Gore replaced John Parish, who was busy becoming a father. Overall, this tour was very well accpted by the fans as EELS made stunning performances. A highlight on the tour surely was the wonderful song Sad Clown, sung by Butch.
E, who had grown a big beard, also performed the famous cover Get Ur Freak On, orginally sung by Missy Elliot. Also, the most surprising incident happened on this tour: Afroman performed his hitsingle Because I Got High together with EELS in Vienna.
After the tour the complete band went into the studio, where the 2003 album Shootenanny! was recorded in only 10 days.
Eels - Sad Clown (Live)
Eels - World of Shit (Live)Tour Of Duty (2003)
After about 10 years of loyal service Butch left the EELS. Officially he couldn't tour with them, because he was on tour with Tracy Chapman, which he actually was. But rumor has it, that Butch had an argument with E about his position in the band and obviously Butch was not happy with E's point of view. Butch' cousin Puddin' replaced him. The other members have been Goldenboy (replaced by Chet Atkins III in the 2nd leg of the tour) and Koool G Murder. The tour promoted EELS' fifth album called Shootenanny!. Also, MC Honky, an alter ego of E, toured as an opening act for them.
They rocked in more than 80 cities all over the world. The songs on this tour have been played very loud and fast.
Eels - Dirty Girl (Live)
Eels - Grace Kelly Blues (Live)No Tour (2004)
This year the world didn't see EELS rocking our asses. In the meantime E recorded EELS' sixth album, played at UCLA's Royce Hall for Hal Wilner Presents Shock and Awe: The Songs of Randy Newman (E performed Living Without You and I Don't Want To Hear it Anymore) and left his recordlabel Dreamworks.Eels with strings (2005)
Eels with strings consisted of 4 violin players, 1 stand up bass player (Big Al), 1 fantastic multi-instrumentalist (The Chet) and the genius himself, E. While the band performed most of the fine tunes of their superb album Blinking Lights And Other Revelations, they also re-interpreted old classics, like Going To Your Funeral Part II, The Only Thing I Care About or Spunky.
A very warm and friendly atmosphere made these evenings to something very special. The band was at every gig in very good humour and played the concerts of their lives. In Germany E called his audience always "Schatzi", which means darling/treasure, and finally performed the Schatzi-Version of Spunky ("Schatzi knows she can save the world...") in Munich. The (seated) audience was very pleased with the performances.
The concert in New York's Town Hall had been captured on the first Eels live-album to be released simultaneously worldwide.
Eels - Spunky (Schatzi Version) (Live)
Eels - The Stars Shine In The Sky Tonight (Live)Eels live and in person - No Strings Attached Tour (2006)
This tour saw the comeback of the Eels as a rock-combo. The sound reminded of the infamous "Bus Driving, Band Rocking"-Tour in
2002. The consistence of the band: E, The Chet (on guitar), Knuckles (on drums) and Krazy Al ("Security Guy"). The concerts were
loud, fast, hot, and rocked the hell out of everybody. There was next to no interaction with the audience, and if then it
came from Krazy Al, who once in a while proclaimed some weird, yet funny lines and high-fived some people in the audience, even
treating them with whipped cream. An unbelievably astonishing tour, which featured the band dressed up in WWII outfits.
Eels - Jesus Gonna Be Here (vocals: The Chet) (Live)
Eels - Cancer For The Cure (Live)
